AV or not AV that is the question...

I have received a few begging letters in recent weeks from both sides in the 'great' debate over the proposed change to the voting system for the Westminster Parliament, which were promptly filed in my blue recycling bin.

While previously I thought that the AV system had attractions I am firmly in the NO camp when it comes to the referendum on 5th May.

I do admit that one of the reasons for this is that the Lib Dems are behind the referendum as part of their strategy to secure permanent coalition government in the UK. This is despite the fact that they would actually prefer the introduction of STV, similar to the system that we now have for Council elections in Scotland.

The golden rule of British politics is never trust the Lib Dems!

If the electorate was to vote in favour of AV we will end up in Scotland with 4 different forms of proportional voting systems - for the Scottish, UK and European Parliaments and local councils - with each system only being used once every four or five years. I think this is a real muddle and shows what happens when political fixes between parties are put before the interests of the electorate.

  1. It would be a welcome change if at some point a politician would make a descision because it benefited the people. By your own admition you are influenced by the Nick Clegg scenario. Why not make a descision from your own mind. Not about getting at a foe or a descision to support your party even thought you may not agree with the descision. Labour will be defeated at this years elections. Mr Gray is not a leader, and I just cant understand why you stuck with this man.Labour are picking up the protest vote ,just as the BNP did in England .I am not comparing your party with the BNP ,just the similarity in voting. We are in a position were political ideoligy is dominating the UK economy. But Labour are not the alternative(at the minute). If the SNP win in Scotland this will have a roll on effect at council elections and Inverclyde will be left under Innes Nelson, god forbid. Stand up to your party and bring Labour back to the people of Inverclyde, before it is to late.

  3. Wish I was wrong but Iain Gray tonight lost you the election ,a disasterous performance on TV tonight. This has been obvious for over a year that this man just couldnt hack it.Labour have ignored the warnings. Why do labour keep shooting themselves in the foot.
You are even doing it at local level with candidate choices. You should have know that Councillor McCallum was an accident waiting to happen, but he was still selected. . I fear the roll on effect , you should take note.

  5. No thanks ,I think this needs someone with a lot of commitment, which I dont see in some of your partys choice of candidate.you need someone willing to put in 100% as this is what makes a good councillor,(no part-timers please) But thanks for offering.
