Parklea Planning Application Submitted

I am delighted to see that Council Officers have submitted a planning application for the proposed new £4.5m community stadium at Parklea, which will incorporate spectator seating for 200, new changing accommodation and a second 3G pitch. This is another important step towards our goal of making Parklea a centre of excellence for football.

Work is due to start on the stadium in April 2011. It will provide a new home for Port Glasgow Juniors and be available for use by the wider community.

  1. £4.5m seems a hell of a lot for a 200 capacity staduim, is there any chance you could give us a rough break down of where this money will be spent on this development

  2. The stadium incorporates changing rooms for 10 full size pitches (2 3G and 8 grass).

  3. Having seen the pictures on Inverclyde Now I find it hard to see how you can call the development a stadium. Surely the council are again missing the chance to give Inverclyde/Port Glasgow a decent facility, in my opinion this is nothing more than another 3G pitch with a large unit full of changing rooms attached onto the side of it which is needed from the rest of the Park Lea development anyway, using the fact it has space for 200 spectators is surely not justification to call it a stadium.

  4. You are obviously entitled to your opinion. I fully expect to get a more than decent facility for £4.5m.

I would also point out that we are planning to spend £1.7m refurbishing Ravenscraig Stadium - I hope it OK to refer to this as a stadium?

  5. Stephen with regards to the Community Stadium at Parklea the point I'm trying to make is it's a hell of a lot of money to be spent on a 3G pitch that has only a capacity of 200, are you honestly telling my that capacity is going to be adequate, come on Clydebank carry a bigger away support than that. In my opinion you are trying to pull the wool over peoples eyes by calling this a 'stadium' when the truth is by calling it that you're trying to justifye £4.5m on one 3G football pitch and a big shed full of changing rooms on one side of it.

In reply to your point about Ravenscraig Stadium, that facility has a covered seating capacity of around 650 and also has terracing opposite the stand that would hold around 200 giving it a capacity of around 850, it will also have it's athletics track brought up to a standard that will make it one of the best in the country. This facility will be able to be used by the community, not just for football and athletic events but for school sports etc given that all the schools pupils will be easily accommodated, you could have a school cup final at the new Parklea Community Stadium simply cause it would not be able to meet demand.

Take your pick between the two what one you think will benefit the community more.

  6. They will both benefit the community. For an area the size of Inverclyde this is a significant investment.

I am not trying to pull the wool over anybody's eyes.

If you are involved in Junior or Youth Football I would be happy to arrange for you to meet with officers to discuss your concerns about the Parklea facility since you clearly don't think what is planned should cost £4.5m.

All you need to do is email me at stephen.mccabe@inverclyde.gov.uk

  7. I'm not involved in Junior football, I'm nothing more than an Inverclyde resident who seems to think that when you spend that sort of money of a project dubbed ''community stadium'' the facility should have at least a capacity that will satisfy demand.

Stephen, If we get what we are promised at Ravenscraig I think it will be a fantastic facility but again adding one extra 3G pitch with a spectator capacity of 200 onto the side of a multi changing room facility at the cost of £4.5m and calling it a community stadium at Parklea is not good enough(in my opinion.

The addition of 3G pitches in Inverclyde is a fantastic addition but is the council committed to keeping these pitches in top condition?
I'll give you one example of what I'm getting at here, the 3G pitch in George Rd Gourock. I recall reading in the Greenock Telegraph about vandalism to the fence and power box at this location, the response was that the police & community wardens would step up patrols in that area and keep youths away from this park. Despite this the youths continued to climb the fence, the police and the community wardens continued to drive by and ignore but instead of the council demanding action from the police and community wardens they decided to cut 2 holes in two of the gates to allow the youths entry to the park anytime of the day or night, in doing so the park in Gourock is now not just used by youths playing football at all hours of the day and night but people exercising their dogs (yes dogs) and gangs of youths drinking at the weekends. Can you tell me why the council caved in and these holes were cut in the gates to allow 24hr access to a facility that a lot of football teams could not afford to get a game on.

  8. I will pass your views onto to the officers who are managing the project. Again feel free to email me and I will arrange for you to speak directly to the officers.

I will also pass on your concerns about the pitch in Gourock.

  9. What has the outcome been from the concerns passed on about the pitch in Gourock, It doesn't look as if anything has been done.

  11. On the 13th of August last year I made reference to the council allowing 24hr access to the 3G football pitch at George Road in Gourock, less than 12 months later thousands of pounds of damage was reported to have been caused at this park. Can I ask you Mr McCabe who did you pass my concerns onto and did you follow any response up you got from them. Again Ive read in the local paper that the police and the community wardens will be again stepping up patrols in the area, again I can tell you that gangs of youths were hanging around and drinking within the park after midnight within days of the damage being highlighted.
