New play facilities set for approval...

The Council's Environment & Regeneration Committee will be asked at its next meeting on 17 January to approve a new £175,000 skate park in Greenock's Battery Park on the site of the existing skate park. The proposal follows consultation with ward councillors, the local community council and park users. The park will be a multi-use facility catering for bmx riders and skateboarders.

The Committee previously approved a £50,000 outdoor gym in Battery Park. Members will hear that procurement of the gym is underway and it should be in place by the end of March.

The Committee will also be asked to approve a £75,000 replacement of the existing play park at Jacob's  Drive in Gourock.

These proposals are part of the Council's ongoing investment programme in new and improved outdoor play facilities and I am sure that they will be welcomed by the local communities.

  1. Mr McCabe, firstly let me say well done to the groups who will benefit from these latest round of grants, I’m sure they are worthwhile.
I’m also sure you are sick of hearing this but here goes, another new year and again the Broomhill misses out again, why again have the council disregarded the one area of Greenock which has seen no investment whatsoever. Residents in Broomhill have now all but given up on receiving any help, recently let down by Riverclyde homes, let down by councillors who promised investment and a new community centre, a football park which is of no use to the kids in the area. Drugs, violence, boarded houses; today’s telegraph has a story of our local shopkeeper coming under attack for the 4th time in 2 years. Every political party which represents this area makes promises, but eventually let us down. We hear how committed they are but nothing is ever done.
I do not underestimate your commitment to improving Inverclyde, but I do have serious doubts about those who supposedly represent this area. Please do something

  2. Did any Group in the Broomhill area bid for funding Chris?

I can assure you that my colleagues Jim Clocherty and Martin Brennan are working hard on behalf of the residents of Broomhill. The funding for a new community centre (£700,000) is still in place and discussions are ongoing regarding possible locations. The Council recently approved the refurbishment of St Patrick's Primary School.

River Clyde Homes also recently approved in principle major investment in its stock in the area. Unfortunately due to Scottish Government funding cuts the opportunity for new build is very limited for the next few years.

The issues that you highlight are recognised by the Council, Police and agencies. I will use whatever influence I have to ensure that that appropriate action is taken to address them.

  3. With all due respect, this answer is simply not good enough,
Firstly ,we have been promised this new community centre for years now and you claim discussions are still ongoing, locations have been suggested ,but councillor Clocherty is adament that this centre is placed near to the centre of the town near Wellington Street, not Broomhill. So when will we see it built?

Also where is our state of the art playground , again our kids have nothing ,absolutely nowhere, and we wonder why they turn to drink or drugs.

Riverclyde homes descision on principle will not come to fruition, like all their promises they just dont deliver,it will take more than a minor refurbishment and lick of paint, and again the money runs out before Broomhill gets its fare share.

How does does the refurbishment of St Patricks help the community, what will this do for kids with nothing to do at night.

I accept that this council has delivered a lot in 5 years, but our area has become the councils
dumping ground, Councillor Clocherty is increasingly losing any support he had in this community, recent tennent meeting have indicated that they have now run out of patience with him.
Mr Brennan is a funny charming man but is frustratingly patronising in his lack of understanding of our problems
Sturgess is thick and clueless and always missing, and the Lib dem least said the better.
All are no better than the last lot we had .

I help in the Broomhill on many youth sports projects and know what is missing, I do not hold out much hope of any help, as you say funding is limited and we are too late.

  4. Sorry you are not satisfied with the reply Chris. I don't think anything I could say would satisfy you at the moment.
