Opening of the Slaemuir Community Pod

I had the privilege this afternoon of officially opening the Slaemuir Community Pod.

What is the Slaemuir Community Pod I hear you ask?

It is a temporary community facility made from converted storage containers, located on the site of the now demolished former Slaemuir Primary School.

The Pod is an initiative by the Council's Safer Communities Service in response to issues highlighted by the local tenants' and residents' association.

The Pod will provide a base for a range of activities for young and old alike, such as music workshops, games nights, arts and crafts and film nights. It will also be used by a number of agencies to provide surgeries, including River Clyde Homes, Strathclyde Police and various Council services.

The Pod is an inter generational project and is open to all members of the community. Safer Communities would encourage more adults and young people to go along and get involved.

For more information on the Pod contact Safer Communities on 07766496622.

As one of the ward Councillors for Slaemuir, I am delighted to lend my support to this worthwhile initiative.

  1. We have been trying for a number of years for an initiative like this for the Broomhill area and have been consistanlty given broken promise after broken promise. The new football park is not intended to aid the community and will probably be used by football teams from all over Inverclyde,I dont see how this will aid the pensioners or single mothers .The money spent could have been used for a community centre that could have served the entire community .Branchton Comunity centre is a thriving hub of the community, the community itself is thriving they didnt need a football pitch. I can just see the residents of broomhill all gathering up at the new park of a winter evening. Im not Cynical just realistic, answer one quesstion what percentage of Broomhill residents will use this new facility compared to how many would use a community centre.

  2. One more comment from another person from the Broomhill ,Its nice to see you take so much pride in your own area Im sure it will get you re-elected,I just wish that we had someone to help us in the way you help your community, not just your guys but all councilors better watch their positions as there is little faith left in any of them in this neck of the woods, whoever wants elected just needs to nip in to the broomhill bar,buy a round and their in, because very few people now care.

  3. You will be very surprised I am sure at how well used the pitch will be by local people when it is operational. I readily accept however - as do my colleagues that represent central Greenock - that more needs to be done.

That is why we have set up a regeneration task group for the Drumfrochar Road/Broomhill area chaired by my colleague Jim Clocherty. If you email me your contact details to Stephen.McCabe@inverclyde.gov.uk I will pass them onto Jim so that he can provide you with more details.
